Happy Birthday to you!

23 July 2023

A year ago I became Auntie Carola of a baby girl. It was the third time, but this time it was to the daughter of my younger brother. Which was very special to me. And now.. she’s already turning ONE! Time flies..

So it was time to buy a present and crochet a cupcake that always stays fresh. The best part? You can use your left over yarn for this little project!

Requirements

  • Cotton yarn in colors you like. I used brown, light pink, pink and gold thread for the cupcake. The icing is crocheted in white. The flowers are crocheted in purple, pink, green and gold.
  • Free pattern from Lalyala
  • Filling
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • A simple flower pattern of your choice, or see below.
  • A simple pattern for the number one of your choice, or see below (or any other number. You can use this idea for ANY birthday or anniversaries).

Elaboration

I followed the pattern from Lalylala with crochet hook 3mm for the cupcake. The top of the cupcake is crocheted with a thread of light pink and a gold thread held together. The icing is crocheted in white.

Flower pattern

This pattern is for one flower. Crochet as many as you like.

Create a magic loop, chain two. Then: crochet 2 double crochet, 1 chain and 1 slip stitch in the magic ring. You’ve now created one flower leave. Repeat this step at least 5 times. When you have enough leaves, pull the string and close the magic loop. Bind off and leave a tail to sew your flower onto your cupcake. Start crocheting your number.

Number one pattern

  • Chain 4.
  • Crochet a single crochet into the second chain from your hook and in the rest of the chains. Chain one and turn (3)
  • Repeat this seven times, but DON’T TURN your work.
  • Chain 4. Now you have 3 single crochets and 4 chains. Turn. (7).
  • Crochet a single crochet in the second chain from your hook and in the other chains/stitches. Chain 1 and turn (6).
  • Crochet 4 single crochet and crochet the last two stitches together (5). You’ve now decreased one stitch.
  • Repeat the decrease row until you have two stitches left. Bind off and weave in your ends.
  • Crochet one more one.

Now you have two identical numbers. Put one aside. Crochet single crochets onto the sides of your number. Attach your yarn, chain 1 and start with single crochets. Close the round with a slip stitch. Repeat this round two or three rows. Depending on how thick you want your number.

When you’re satisfied about the thickness bind off and leave a long tail to sew the other one on top of it and start sewing. Slightly fill your number along the way.

Finishing touches

Now it’s time to decorate your cupcake! Put the icing on top, then your number 1 and for the finishing touch your flowers. Voila! You now have created a lifelong memory for the first birthday of you niece, nephew or child!
