Lion Brand Granny Square Blanket

26 October 2020

Last summer is was on holiday in Austria. No roadtrip this time, but visit the hotspots from one location. Ideal to start a new crochet project in evening while sitting on the couch. But I did not want to take a lot of yarns with me. The answer: cakes! Cakes is a skein of yarn that is has a minimum of 500 meters/546 yards with a nice color gradient. I bought two cakes to crochet a blanket.

Granny Square blanket

A while back I bought two skeins of Lion Brand Mandala cakes in the color Warlock. I spotted this color in a scarf before. But I have already have so many scarfs that I wanted to do something else. So then I thought: I will crochet a blanket for in our car. My husband likes cold air in the car, even in winter which leads to a frozen Carola.

I chose for an easy stitch: the granny stitch. Ideal for when your on holiday. Grab your crochet hook, yarn and get started right away! After Row 2 you get the hang of it and you don’t need to look at the pattern at all.. Do you want to make this easy blanket? Lucky you! Because I wrote the pattern down below, especially for you!

Requirements

2 skeins of Lion Brand Mandala yarn, 537 meter
Crochet hook 4mm
Stitchmarkers
Scissors
Needle

Used Stitches

Chain
Slip Stitch
Single Crochet
Double Crochet

Pattern

Row 1 – Make a magic loop, chain 3 (this counts as one double crochet), 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, slip stitch in the third stitch of the chain. You now have 4 clusters of 3 double crochet.
Row 2 – Chain 1, 1 slip stitch, chain 3, 2 double crochet in the chain space of row 1, chain 1, 3 double crochet in the same chain space, chain 2, *3 double crochet in the chain space of row 1, chain 1, 3 double crochet in the same chain space, chain 2*. Repeat until you have 8 clusters. Slip stitch in the 3 chain.
Row 3 – until there is no more yarn left: In every corner you make two clusters with 1 chain in between. In other open chain spaces you make 1 clusters. You gain 4 clusters every cluster. Sometimes you don’t need to start the row with 1 chain and a slip stitch, but you can start with chain 3 right away. You’ll know when you need to start with a chain and a slip stitch or not.

Border (optional)
The last row is optional, but you can make a border with single crochets. On every double crochet make one and two in every chain space. Make three in every corner.
